Biedenharn grant

Airline High School math teacher, Anna Welch wrote and submitted a grant opportunity for the Biedenharn grant in hopes of being awarded the maximum of $2500 to supply her classroom with as many touchscreen Chromebooks the money could buy.  It was her first time to take advantage of any grant writing opportunity, so when she received the e-mail announcing that she was one of the twelve lucky recipients, she was ecstatic! She plans on continuing to write grants to eventually have a classroom set of the touchscreen Chromebooks that can be shared among the Algebra department.  These devices double as a laptop and a virtual whiteboard.  Students will be able to show their work on their screens and either snapshot it to be turned in online or directly display it to the television screen for the class to see.  Her students will have more access to the great educational apps and resources there are, and they can be integrated into the classroom on a daily basis, rather than when there is an opening in the computer lab every now and then.  Google classroom, ClassFlow, Poll Everywhere, Socrative, Desmos, Kahoot, Empowered Solutions, Recap, and so many others are programs that Ms. Welch has been wanting to explore and utilize more, but hasn’t had the access to enough technology to implement their uses regularly.  Now, with the help of this grant, she is on the path to being able to do that.  Even being able to have one touchscreen Chromebook per group of students will open the door for more opportunities for students to further their learning.   She hopes that these capabilities will increase the active student engagement, differentiated instruction, and individualization in the student's learning in her classroom.  If students can better their conceptual understanding of these mathematical concepts and achieve the math scores Ms. Welch knows they are capable of through use of this technology, then she would gladly write as many grants as it takes to see them be successful!

AIRLINE HIGH SCHOOL YEARBOOK WINS BIG

The Airline 2016 Valhalla staff swept the Louisiana Scholastic Press Awards this year. The yearbook was chosen as the Overall Best in the State of Louisiana and awarded a trophy, then awarded first place in the categories of Division Pages, Student Life Spread, Academic Spread and Caption Writing. Additionally, the yearbook placed second in the categories of Clubs/Organization Spread, Class Section, Advertising Section and third in Cover Design. "I am thrilled the hard work of these students was recognized. They attended so many games and events for pictures and stories, in addition to working hours beyond their class attendance. We have fun in yearbook, but we also work so very hard to bring Airline the best book possible," said Mrs. Hahn, the Valhalla Adviser. Congratulations to Airline's yearbook staff!
